The Poverty Alliance is hosting a series of member seminars to discuss key policy areas for Scotland’s next Tackling Child Poverty Delivery Plan. Two in-person sessions have been organised, focusing on whole family approaches and the role of paid work.

These events offer Poverty Alliance members the opportunity to contribute their insight and expertise towards the development of the next Plan, identifying the action needed to tackle child poverty more effectively.

Whole Family Approaches
Wednesday 7 May, 10am – 2pm, followed by lunch
Recital Room, City Halls, Glasgow

Holistic whole family approaches have been highlighted in the current Child Poverty Delivery Plan, with initiatives such as the Whole Family Wellbeing Fund. The First Minister has reaffirmed a commitment to this approach as a central part of Scotland’s mission to eradicate child poverty. This session will explore what more can be done to embed whole family approaches and how they can help achieve child poverty targets. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about these approaches and make recommendations for the next Delivery Plan.

The Role of Paid Work
Wednesday 21 May, 10am – 2pm, followed by lunch
Grassmarket Community Project, Edinburgh

Although the current Plan includes actions to support paid work and employment, progress has been hampered by implementation gaps and budget cuts. Around three-quarters of children living in poverty in Scotland are in households where someone is in paid employment. Despite efforts towards becoming a Fair Work Nation and increases in the real Living Wage, paid work is not yet consistently providing a sustainable route out of poverty. This seminar will discuss what action is needed to ensure fair work, decent wages, and sustainable hours, and to address the structural inequalities faced by women, Black and minority ethnic communities, and disabled people. Participants will learn about policy options and help shape recommendations for the next Plan.
